Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has conceded to City Councilwoman Nithya Raman in a hard-fought election, marking a significant political shift in the city. Karen Bass, the first Black woman to serve as Los Angeles Mayor, shared her reflections on her tenure and the challenges facing the city.
Bass acknowledged her supporters, volunteers, business leaders, and family in an email announcement. Reflecting on her term, she highlighted efforts to reduce street homelessness, improve public safety, and expand affordable housing. Bass also emphasized resilience in the face of wildfires and federal troop deployments.
Karen Bass expressed gratitude and love for Los Angeles, even while acknowledging the loss. She promised a smooth transition, stating that the voters’ decision must be respected, despite her disappointment.
Nithya Raman, supported by the Democratic Socialists of America, is set to become the next Mayor as Los Angeles faces issues like homelessness, a reduced police force, and housing affordability. Her election represents a shift driven by younger generations frustrated with economic challenges and housing costs.
Political analyst Dan Schnur noted that Raman connected with a new generation seeking change. An October poll indicated that Bass faced dissatisfaction, with only 25.5% approving of her role while Raman led with 46.7% support.
During her time, Bass launched the ‘Inside Safe’ initiative to transition people from encampments to temporary housing. However, homelessness increased to 45,194 people in 2026.
Bass also confronted challenges in rebuilding the police department, which struggled with staffing. The Palisades fire drew scrutiny toward her leadership and the city’s emergency readiness.
Raman’s upcoming term will address crises with the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics on the horizon. She has committed to altering policing strategies by expanding unarmed response teams and potentially replacing LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell.
Raman faces confrontation over her stance against restricting camping in public spaces, countering views that enforcement is crucial for community safety and order.
Despite skepticism, some in Los Angeles’ real estate sector are hopeful about Raman’s leadership. Mott Smith from USC praised her data-driven approach as a leader. Jason Oppenheim called for unity, urging Angelenos to support Raman’s mayoral term.
