Massachusetts marks a significant milestone by recognizing the first certified union for Uber and Lyft drivers in the United States. Governor Maura Healey highlighted the importance of this development, stating that unionization means improved pay for drivers and their families.
The App Drivers Union announced that they will represent around 70,000 rideshare drivers in Massachusetts. This makes it the largest group of private-sector workers to have their union formally recognized since Ford employees joined the United Auto Workers back in 1941. Autumn Weintraub, the union’s executive director, called it one of the most significant union organizing victories in the last century.
The Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations confirmed the union had support from 32% of active rideshare drivers, surpassing the 25% threshold required for certification.
The union’s certification allows the App Drivers Union to engage in collective bargaining for its members. This would be a first for rideshare drivers, as no collective agreements exist between drivers and companies like Uber or Lyft. Massachusetts’ decision to allow drivers the right to unionize was voted in favor by 54% of voters in 2024.
The state is also considering new regulatory measures. The Department of Public Utility is proposing increased background checks for drivers and more options for riders to verify they are in the correct vehicle.
The App Drivers Union works in partnership with the Service Employees International Union and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Leaders from both unions were set to attend a rally in Boston at the state house. A celebration with Governor Healey is planned, reflecting on how this union recognition could uplift families across the state by securing better wages.
