President Donald Trump spoke at the 158th National Memorial Day Observance, marking the nation’s 250th anniversary, held at the Memorial Amphitheater in Arlington National Cemetery on May 25, 2026. Following this, he has scheduled a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. This marks his third visit in 13 months, raising questions about his health.
The White House described this appointment as a routine annual dental and medical check-up, part of regular preventive care. Trump, turning 80 years old in June, holds the record as the oldest person to assume the presidency, surpassed only by President Joe Biden. Concerns about Trump’s health have been fueled by observations of swollen ankles and bruised hands.
In April of the previous year, Trump underwent his last physical examination, proclaiming he performed well on a cognitive test. The White House stated Trump was in excellent health, but his subsequent visit to Walter Reed in October led to renewed concerns. By December, Trump received a CT scan to evaluate his cardiovascular and abdominal health, with White House physician Capt. Sean Barbabella affirming Trump’s overall excellent health.
Trump addressed health concerns directly in January, regretting the October CT scan due to ensuing speculations. He attributed hand bruising to excessive aspirin use. Health became a campaign subject as Trump critiqued Biden’s fitness for office, calling him “Sleepy Joe.” Amid Biden’s visible decline, he withdrew from the presidential race shortly after the debate against Trump in June 2024.
Despite concerns, the White House vigorously defends Trump’s health citing his demanding schedule and international engagement. Over the weekend, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung highlighted Trump’s extended workday as he pursued a U.S.-Iran peace deal. Cheung asserted Trump’s focus and determination.
In his second term, Trump’s cabinet members, including HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have shared insights on Trump’s health. During a podcast, Kennedy mentioned CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz reviewed Trump’s records, noting high testosterone levels for Trump’s age.
Presidents enjoy access to preventive care and receive daily health evaluations from White House physicians. Visits to Walter Reed typically handle annual physicals, advanced imaging, or serious illnesses like Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis.
Trump’s health disclosures have been sparse. Last summer, a memo disclosed Trump’s chronic venous insufficiency diagnosis, although his cardiovascular health remained “excellent.” A detailed health report from April 2025 noted scarring from a gunshot wound, diverticulosis, and a benign polyp, advising a follow-up colonoscopy in three years. Trump’s weight was recorded at 224 pounds, a reduction from 2020, with improved cholesterol levels.
In July 2024, following the assassination attempt in Butler, Dr. Ronny Jackson shared Trump was recovering well. In 2023, Trump released a brief letter indicating weight loss and excellent cognitive exam results. During his first term, Trump’s health exams were frequent, receiving favorable evaluations from Dr. Jackson, who famously commented on Trump’s genetics and diet.
The White House did not respond to NPR’s inquiries about the upcoming medical examination, relying instead on prior announcements.
Dr. Byron Lee, a Stanford University cardiovascular medicine professor, commented on the commonality of annual physicals at Trump’s age. While aware of the general risks associated with aging, Lee noted active individuals like Trump can typically maintain busy schedules. He suggested Trump’s activity level positively influences his overall health.
Lee expressed curiosity about Trump’s aspirin use, as it commonly causes bruising. He also noted Trump’s leg swelling, attributed to chronic venous insufficiency, merits further investigation. While not dangerous alone, it could indicate other issues.
Lee highlighted the importance of weight management and activity for reducing heart disease risks. He mentioned GLP-1 prescriptions, such as Ozempic, for similar patients managing weight.
