Cuban Government Unites Around Raúl Castro Amid Indictment

4 weeks ago 0

Cuban officials have shown strong support for Raúl Castro, the country’s former president, following an indictment on murder charges related to the downing of two civilian planes three decades ago. The charges were announced in Miami.

Raúl, known as a revolutionary hero, became the focal point of a national show of unity. Social media posts from state-run outlets and Cuban officials depicted him as a youthful soldier, in scenes with children, alongside his brother Fidel, and engaging with teenagers. These images were accompanied by messages praising his honor and integrity.

“He’s like a father to me,” Cuba’s president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, expressed in a video shared on social media.

The indictment accuses Castro of being responsible for the 1996 shooting down of two civilian aircraft in international waters near Cuba. Though he is no longer the head of state, his influence remains significant given his past role as defense minister for nearly five decades.

The charges appear to be a tactic by the U.S. to exert pressure on Cuba’s government, potentially igniting a defiant stance among Cuban leaders against the United States, according to analysts.

In Havana, reactions were captured as citizens watched televised reports about the indictment. This situation comes as Cuba braces for potential diplomatic and political ramifications from the U.S. action against one of its prominent figures.
