During Super Bowl LX this Sunday, artificial intelligence will take center stage with a novel ad campaign from Anthropic. The company recently showcased a sneak peek of its first Super Bowl advertisement on “Good Morning America,” highlighting its AI assistant, Claude.
The ad adopts a humorous tone, featuring a man sitting on a couch across from what seems to be a therapist. In the ad, the man inquires about improving communication with his mother. The AI assistant, Claude, personified as the therapist, responds, “Great question. Improved communication with your mom can bring you closer,” before offering an unexpected twist by promoting a fictional mature dating site, leading to the man’s confusion.
“Or, if the relationship can’t be fixed, find emotional connection with other older women on Golden Encounters, the mature dating site that connects sensitive cubs with roaring cougars,” the AI therapist humorously suggests.
The ad underscores Anthropic’s dedication to keeping their AI interactions free from advertisements. “This really isn’t intended to be about any other company other than us,” explained Daniela Amodei, Anthropic’s president, during an interview with ABC News’ Rebecca Jarvis. Amodei emphasized the company’s focus on privacy, criticizing the practice of incorporating advertisements in AI tools, which she believes undermines the respectful treatment of users’ personal data.
Founded by siblings Daniela and Dario Amodei in 2021 after parting ways with OpenAI, Anthropic has placed a strong emphasis on safety features, especially with regard to children. The company does not permit users under the age of 18 to access its AI assistant.
Reflecting on the role of AI in the lives of young people, Daniela Amodei expressed a combination of excitement and caution as she considers the future. She hopes that AI can contribute to healthier and happier lives but acknowledges the ongoing need for societal work to ensure the safe and thoughtful development of technology.
Amodei’s brother, Dario, has also been vocal about the risks and challenges faced by the AI industry. In his essay titled “The Adolescence of Technology,” he highlighted the potential dangers and called for increased awareness and action to mitigate these challenges.
In her conversation with “GMA,” Daniela Amodei emphasized Anthropic’s proactive stance on addressing safety and risk management. She sees the company’s efforts as potentially providing a framework for meaningful regulation within the field.
As AI becomes more integrated into the lives of young people, the discussion around their interactions with AI and the necessity for parental controls has gained importance. According to Amodei, considering limits on direct interactions with AI models for those under 18 is a sound initial step.
Amodei indicated strong support for regulatory measures, stating that Anthropic has been involved in dialogue at the state level in California and New York, advocating for regulations related to child safety in AI use.
She concluded with optimism about the possibility of federal regulations, reflecting Anthropic’s commitment to engaging in policy discussions that encourage child safety and ethical AI use.
