Chock and Bates Set Their Sights on Olympic Gold in Ice Dancing

1 month ago 0

The acclaimed U.S. ice dancing duo, Madison Chock and Evan Bates, has achieved numerous successes throughout their partnership; however, the ultimate prize of an Olympic gold medal has remained out of reach. This could change on Wednesday night as the pair prepares to compete in the ice dance final.

Following a strong second-place finish with their rhythm dance routine, Chock and Bates are poised to aim for the gold medal. Despite capturing three consecutive world championships and victories in three Grand Prix Finals, the highest they have placed at the Winter Games is fourth.

Their main competitors are the French pair, Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron, who currently hold the top rhythm dance score from Monday. The difference in scores between these leading teams is minuscule, separated by a mere 0.46 points.

Adding a layer of complexity to this fierce competition is the fact that both duos have trained under the same coaches: Patrice Lauzon, Marie-France Dubreuil, and Romain Haguenauer at the prestigious Ice Academy of Montreal.

“I think the coaches do their very best to ensure that everyone has what they need and feel supported. And if there’s something that we need, we can just ask,” Chock stated regarding their relationship with the coaching team.

Though Cizeron is a previous gold medalist in ice dancing, changes occurred when he announced retirement with former partner Gabriella Papadakis in December 2024. Surprisingly, he returned to the sport partnering with Fournier Beaudry the following March. Their training alongside Chock and Bates came as a shock to the American athletes, but they adapted to sharing the ice.

Chock shared, “We were initially surprised and blindsided, but we quickly realized it doesn’t affect our goals or how we pursue them.” The upcoming free dance event in Milan represents a pivotal moment, as Chock and Bates strive to claim the elusive first-place position they’ve been chasing.
