The family of Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, has issued a heartfelt plea seeking proof of life after she went missing last Saturday. Ed Smart, known for his daughter Elizabeth Smart’s abduction case in 2002, commented on the family’s release of a video message, noting the strategy behind such public appeals. Appearing on “Fox & Friends,” Smart emphasized the importance of communicating directly with the potential captors. “It’s critically important for the abductors to understand that efforts are being made to comply with demands and that there is a strong desire to bring their mother home,” he explained.
Elizabeth Smart endured a harrowing nine-month ordeal after being kidnapped as a teenager from her home in Salt Lake City, only to be found alive later. Ed Smart pointed out that families in similar situations often turn to public statements to exert pressure on captors and reassure their loved ones that the search is ongoing.
“Communicating directly with those who have taken her is crucial,” Smart said.
Nancy Guthrie, who is 84, was last seen at her Tucson, Arizona residence on Saturday night. The investigation remains active, with law enforcement acknowledging that a crime occurred, though no specific suspects or motives have been identified. The Guthrie family’s video message, released on Wednesday night, encourages anyone with information concerning Nancy’s disappearance to come forward. Responding to reports suggesting the existence of ransom notes, the family expressed their willingness to engage in dialogue.
“We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her,” Savannah Guthrie stated, appearing alongside her siblings.
The family reiterated their readiness to listen, appealing to those responsible to make contact.
During Elizabeth Smart’s disappearance, Ed Smart highlighted the role of public statements in keeping the case visible. Additionally, the role of both traditional and social media has become increasingly crucial in such cases. Elizabeth’s case gained renewed attention when one of her captors featured on the television show “America’s Most Wanted.”
“Her captors did make her aware that there was a search that we were out there calling for her,” Smart shared.
Even if Nancy Guthrie might not hear these messages directly, the knowledge that active search efforts are underway remains vital.
“It’s hard to know whether Nancy can hear or not, but it’s important to make that effort,” Smart said.
Highlighting the emotional toll, Smart added, “Bringing her hope in a very difficult time, and keeping her hopes up that this is going to be resolved, and she’ll be back with her family, nothing could be more important.”
