Fire at Lehigh Valley Hospital Prompts Evacuations and Emergency Response

A fire erupted at a building connected to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Pennsylvania on Wednesday night, leading to significant emergency operations and the evacuation of patients, officials reported. The Dickson City Fire Department announced on Facebook that it, along with other first-alarm response teams, was called to the hospital around 9:40 p.m. Upon evaluation, Fire Chief Richard Chowanec increased the number of responding units after discovering that the fire was located in the roof of the original Scranton Orthopedics building, which is an older section attached to the more modern Lehigh Valley Hospital main facility.

While there was no active fire within the main hospital building, smoke and water damage were noted, according to officials.

“Two potential causes of the fatal assisted-living facility fire revealed; first responder bodycam rescues go viral,” the department noted.

Assistance in evacuating patients was provided by police from the Mid-Valley area, hospital staff, EMS teams, the Lackawanna County Emergency Management Agency, and the Pennsylvania State Police. WNEP-TV 16 reported that 77 patients were relocated to nearby medical facilities, with no major injuries reported.

The local station also noted that fire crews battled the flames even as parts of the orthopedics unit collapsed, successfully containing the blaze by around 11:15 p.m.

The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal Unit has been tasked with investigating the fire’s origin and cause, as stated by the Dickson City Fire Department.

In a message shared on X, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed gratitude to first responders for their bravery, saying, “Lori and I are praying for the staff, patients, their families, and the entire community tonight.”
