In a recent speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s 2026 Greater New York dinner, former CNN host Don Lemon addressed his recent arrest, comparing his situation to that of historical civil rights activists. The arrest is linked to an anti-immigration enforcement protest at a church in Minnesota.
Reflecting on the event, Lemon described feeling the intense pressure of having his freedom controlled by the state due to his professional activities. He stated, “Can you imagine the state having control of your freedom simply because they don’t like that you are doing your job? So that was very frightening to me.”
Lemon appeared to participate in the protest within a Minnesota church last month.
During his remarks, Lemon pondered the struggles of past civil rights heroes and emphasized that he stands with more resources and rights today than those initial fighters for freedom. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by individuals like Marsha P. Johnson and those involved in pivotal moments like Stonewall.
Clarifying his role, Lemon stated emphatically, “I saw how fast a story can be turned into a warning. But I’m not an activist. I’m not a protester. I am a journalist. And my calling is not to shout, but my calling is to witness. And that’s what they’re afraid of, of that witness to tell,” he said.
In response to the arrest, Lemon noted his charge was related to conspiracy to deprive rights and a violation of the FACE Act for protesting against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at St. Paul’s Cities Church. He was released without bail by January 30.
In a subsequent reflection on the incident, Lemon drew parallels with iconic figures such as James Baldwin, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X. He wrote, “James Baldwin understood that clarity carries consequences. Dr. King knew that truth invites punishment. Malcolm X saw that systems built on hierarchy will always attempt to silence those who name them.”
Lemon’s reflection underscores the ongoing struggle individuals face when they challenge powerful systems with truthful narratives.
