Former U.S. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn Announces Congressional Run in Maryland

2 months ago 0

Harry Dunn, a former U.S. Capitol Police officer known for his activism following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, has announced his candidacy for Congress in Maryland. Dunn, a Democrat, gained national recognition after testifying at the House January 6th Select Committee hearings.

This marks Dunn’s second attempt to win a congressional seat. He previously vied for the Democratic nomination in Maryland’s 3rd District in 2024 but was unsuccessful. Now, Dunn is targeting the 5th District, an area covering the eastern and southern suburbs of Washington, D.C., which is currently represented by retiring Democrat Rep. Steny Hoyer.

The 5th District, where Dunn was raised and became a known athlete, includes Prince George’s County. Commenting on his decision to run, Dunn stated, It’s home and it made me who I am. He emphasized the need for effective congressional representation, saying, We need people here in Congress who are prepared to stand up and fight.

Dunn has been critical of the Trump administration, particularly over mass layoffs impacting federal workers in the 5th District, a region heavily populated with federal employees. Furthermore, Dunn has been vocal against former President Trump’s actions and denial regarding the Capitol riot. Trump pardoned numerous riot defendants and characterized their prosecution as unfair. In contrast, Dunn remains resolute in his stance, saying, I have to respond to the rewriting of what happened that day.

The race to succeed Steny Hoyer is already competitive, with several Democrats in the fray. Despite Hoyer endorsing Maryland state delegate Adrian Boafo, Dunn’s entry intensifies the contest. Other candidates include Quincy Bareebe and volunteer firefighter Harry Jarin, who both represent different visions for change within the district.

Hoyer, a longstanding Democratic figure first elected in the 1980s, will retire, leaving behind a reliably Democratic district. In 2024, he secured re-election with a commanding 67% of the vote. As Democrats navigate through debates on generational change, the dynamics within the 5th District’s race promise to be significant in shaping future political directions.
