In Santa Clara, California, Kenneth Walker III, running back for the Seattle Seahawks, described his experience of winning the Super Bowl and being awarded the MVP as a “surreal” achievement. This moment, he said, is something that the imaginative child he once was in Tennessee would have found unbelievable.
If I would have told myself as a kid, I wouldn’t have guessed that I would be the one to win the MVP,Walker shared shortly after receiving the honor. So it’s a surreal moment.
In his high school years, Walker faced a daunting challenge when he was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs, seemingly ending his football aspirations. However, by seeking additional medical opinions, he began treatment with blood thinner medication, allowing him to return to the field.
“When a doctor told me I couldn’t play no more, I just thought football was over,” Walker recalled. “So it was a shocking moment. But you know, my dad worked with me throughout that whole process, and he was in the hospital with me, as well, and my mom.”
This experience instilled in Walker a deep sense of gratitude for each day he gets to play football, using it as an inspiring narrative about perseverance and family support.
When fellow running back Zach Charbonnet suffered an ACL tear during a playoff victory over San Francisco, Walker anticipated an increased role. You know, for somebody like that to get hurt, it sucks,
Walker remarked. I wrote his number on my wrist. I was going to show it when I scored, but I didn’t get to score a touchdown. But yeah, he supported me through everything.
Throughout the game, Walker exhibited outstanding performance, rushing for 135 yards—the highest in the game—as the Seattle offense capitalized on his abilities to dominate New England.
Seattle coach Mike Macdonald expressed his happiness with Walker’s performance, praising him highly. I’m really happy for Ken; he played a tremendous game,
Macdonald stated. Everyone really dedicated themselves to the run game today, which is something we had to get going to really control the game. And I think this is one of the best versions of Ken that we’ve [seen] up to this point.
Walker made history as the first running back since Terrell Davis in 1998 to earn the Super Bowl MVP title. He expressed a desire to renew the significance of his position, wishing to see the running back role regain its former prominence.
You know, back in the day, people used to love running backs. So I just hope we get that same energy back sometime soon,he mentioned.
With this being Walker’s final contract year with Seattle, the Super Bowl MVP accolade will be a valuable asset as he approaches free agency in the spring and summer of this year.
