In a significant development, a Maryland man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly appearing at the home of Russell Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, located in northern Virginia. Colin Demarco, aged 26, was arrested by the Arlington County police on January 22 and faces charges that include attempted murder, carrying a firearm without a permit, and unlawfully wearing a mask.
According to information obtained by NBC News, Demarco is accused of plotting to murder Vought. Reports suggest that during a search, deputies from the U.S. Marshals Service discovered Demarco had been working on a manifesto and had notes related to weapons and a “body disposal guide.” The complaint highlights that Demarco described the November 2024 election as a particularly low point in his life.
A spokesperson for the Office of Management and Budget, responding to inquiries about Vought being the presumed target, conveyed gratitude for the proactive efforts by law enforcement to ensure the safety of Vought and his family.
Demarco’s presence was confirmed at Vought’s Arlington residence on August 10 through footage captured by a Ring doorbell camera, leading to his identification. Authorities responded to a report of a suspicious individual at approximately 3:15 p.m. An eyewitness reported observing a man on the porch, masked and wearing gloves, carrying a backpack and concealing what appeared to be a firearm, as he inquired about Vought before departing. This prompted the witness to alert the authorities.
The police investigation uncovered digital evidence indicating that Demarco had acquired directions to Vought’s home and possessed information about relative-owned firearms. Additionally, a guide detailing methods to evade criminal detection was found. Engaging in online discussions, Demarco allegedly solicited others to commit murder and appeared at Vought’s home shortly after.
Currently held without bond, Demarco is scheduled for a preliminary court hearing on February 23 at the Arlington County Detention Facility.
Reacting to these developments, Rep. Brendan Boyle from Pennsylvania expressed deep concern, stating, “I am relieved the suspect was caught before any violence occurred.” He emphasized that political violence is intolerable and represents an attack not just on individuals but on democracy itself, declaring it has no place in the United States.
This incident occurs amid increasing anxiety over the rising tide of political violence across the U.S. Notably, in recent incidents, conservative activist Charlie Kirk lost his life during a college event in Utah, and Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were tragically killed, with Sen. John Hoffman and his spouse injured in separate attacks.
The U.S. Capitol Police released a report indicating a third consecutive annual rise in threats related to Congress, marking the highest recorded level in years.
