The Miami RedHawks secured a thrilling victory over Buffalo on Tuesday night, marking their 23rd consecutive win. This triumph not only extends their winning streak but also sets a new record in Mid-American Conference history. With this achievement, Miami holds the longest active winning streak in Division I men’s basketball.
Luke Skaljac, a sophomore guard, was instrumental in the win, scoring a career-high 19 points, with 15 of those coming in the second half. His outstanding performance helped the RedHawks secure a narrow 73-71 victory. Contributions also came from Brant Byers, who added 11 points, and senior guard Peter Suder, who scored 10 points and provided eight assists. Skaljac shared, via the team’s website, “We keep finding ways to win, and tonight was just another example of that.”
“I know we can score, we’re one of the best offensive teams in the country,”
Head coach Travis Steele, speaking to the Cincinnati Enquirer, emphasized the importance of defense in maintaining their streak.
This season’s success has historical significance for the RedHawks as they climbed into the top 25 rankings for the first time since 1999. Remarkably, Miami is one of only two teams in Division I still undefeated, a position that puts them ahead of the No. 1 ranked team, Arizona, which maintains a 22-game winning streak.
Miami currently holds the No. 23 spot, edging closer to their first NCAA tournament since 2007. Unlike that tournament run, which ended early, Miami has a storied past with notable successes, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 1999 with Wally Szczerbiak and multiple bids in the 1980s, spearheaded by Ron Harper, the school’s all-time leading scorer.
Reflecting on these achievements, Miami alum Chad Pergram, a Fox News Chief Congressional Correspondent, recalls the vibrant atmosphere and standout performances during the Harper era. According to Pergram, Millett Hall was electrifying on game days. “They have never before or since seen a player like Ron Harper,” he remarked.
This historical run has reignited interest and attendance in Miami’s games, with recent records suggesting a surge in fan presence. Pergram remembers prior events where attendance waned but is enthusiastic about the current trend. Last week’s win over Northern Illinois set a record with an attendance of 10,640, a promising indication of renewed community support.
The RedHawks’ unbeaten streak has sparked debates over their schedule strength. While winning the conference tournament would guarantee their spot in the NCAA tournament, their fate otherwise rests with the Selection Committee.
As this impressive season progresses, Miami prepares to face Marshall on Saturday in another crucial game.
