NYPD Releases Bodycam Footage of Officer-Involved Shooting in Queens

2 months ago 0

The New York City Police Department has made public the body camera footage showing the critical moment when an officer shot a 22-year-old man, Jabez Chakraborty, who was reported to be wielding a kitchen knife. The incident took place in Queens after police were called to the scene due to a mental health crisis reported by the family.

The footage captures the intense situation as officers entered the living room where Chakraborty was allegedly threatening them with the knife. Despite multiple attempts to de-escalate by ordering him to drop the weapon, the man continued to advance toward the officer. A woman appeared to try and intervene by blocking him, but Chakraborty pushed forward.

The officer retreated to a more secure location but Chakraborty pursued him, leading the officer to discharge his weapon. Chakraborty sustained four gunshot wounds and is currently in critical yet stable condition in hospital care.

This incident has sparked debate on the appropriate response to mental health crises. Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized the need for mental health treatment over criminal charges in such scenarios. During a recent press briefing, he insisted that Chakraborty should receive mental health care, recognizing years of his struggle with schizophrenia.

“It is evident from the footage that Jabez requires mental health treatment rather than criminal prosecution,” stated Mayor Mamdani. “We must ensure all response options are available during such emergencies.”

The family of Chakraborty has been vocal about their dissatisfaction with how law enforcement handled the situation, advocating for changes that prioritize family needs and avoid re-traumatization. They have called for the release of additional footage and urged local prosecutors to dismiss any charges against Chakraborty.

Meanwhile, Patrick Hendry, President of the Police Benevolent Association, defended the officers’ actions as professional and restrained, considering the rapidly evolving and unsafe circumstances they encountered.

The Queens District Attorney’s Office is currently investigating the incident. Initial reports suggest the possibility of pursuing an attempted murder indictment. However, the outcome remains to be seen as authorities continue their inquiry into this complex and sensitive case.
