On the night of February 4, 2026, a police helicopter tragically crashed at an active shooting scene in Flagstaff, Arizona, resulting in the deaths of both individuals on board. According to local authorities, the helicopter, an Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Ranger, was offering tactical air support to Flagstaff police and other law enforcement agencies when the incident occurred.

The crash claimed the lives of the pilot and a trooper who also served as a paramedic. At the time of the crash, police officers were engaged in a gunfight with the suspect of an active shooting. The suspect sustained non-fatal gunshot wounds and was subsequently apprehended, as confirmed by the Flagstaff police. Fortunately, there were no other injuries reported in connection to the event.

The AZDPS Major Incident Division will spearhead the investigation into the shooting, working in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to examine the circumstances surrounding the helicopter crash.

Amanda Brewer, a resident of the area, recounted hearing three gunshots followed by two more around 8:40 p.m. local time, which prompted her to call 911. Police officers arrived swiftly, and according to Brewer, she later heard a series of 15 to 20 gunshots.

Brewer described how the helicopter began hovering over her house shortly after 10 p.m., accompanied by additional gunfire. “You could hear the blades going,” she remarked. “Then there was a very large crash; it shook the house. It was startling.”

The aftermath of the crash included a significant fire in the forested area behind Brewer’s home, coupled with further gunshots.

In response to the incident, Flagstaff police issued a social media post at approximately 10:15 p.m. instructing residents in one neighborhood to shelter in place as a precautionary measure.
