A tragic event unfolded in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device outside a mosque, resulting in the deaths of at least 31 individuals and injuring nearly 170 others. The attack took place when the Shiite Muslim mosque was filled with worshipers attending Friday prayers in the suburb of Tarlai.
Images from the aftermath revealed harrowing scenes of chaos, with many victims lying in pools of blood inside the Imambargah Khadijatul Kubra mosque. Emergency services rushed to transport the injured to nearby hospitals, with children sadly among those affected by the blast.
Witnesses recounted the terrifying moments of the attack. Zahir Hussain, who was near the mosque, described being thrown against his car by the force of the explosion. “After that, there was a chilling silence, followed by scenes so horrific that words fail me,” he shared.
Security officials indicated that prior to this incident, heightened security alerts were in place following another suicide bombing targeting a court in Islamabad two months earlier. They suggested that the assailants, unable to target high-profile locations, opted for “soft targets” such as mosques.
Authorities swiftly declared a state of emergency in the capital’s healthcare facilities. Hospitals, including the nearby PIMS Hospital, reached full capacity, necessitating the transfer of some victims to other medical establishments in Islamabad and neighboring Rawalpindi.
Following the attack, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened with the interior minister and called for a thorough investigation. He committed to bringing those responsible to justice, emphasizing that hatred and insecurity would not be tolerated in Pakistan.
While no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, Pakistan’s history of violent acts by various regional terror organizations, such as the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban and ISIS-Khorasan, casts a long shadow of ongoing concerns.
