Renowned actress Susan Lucci opened up about the profound impact of losing her husband of over five decades, Helmut Huber, and how she found the strength to move forward. Huber, originally from Austria, was a talented TV producer and chef who passed away in 2022 at 84, a month after suffering a stroke.
In her autobiography “La Lucci,” the “All My Children” star candidly discusses her grief and the road to rebuilding her life without Huber, whom she had been with since she was 22. Married in 1969, the couple spent 53 years together, raising two children, Liza and Andreas. Only months into dating, Lucci and Huber took the plunge into marriage, building a family and a life filled with cherished memories.
Lucci admitted to Fox News Digital that she found herself at a loss about how to continue life without him. She described the early days of widowhood as feeling entirely unmoored. “There’s talk of hope,” she recalled, “and the only thing I hoped for was that he would come walking back through the door.”
After Huber’s death, Lucci retreated from the public eye, canceling appearances and spending much time alone, reflecting on the life they shared. Despite the heartache, Lucci didn’t turn to anger in her grief; instead, she found comfort in her faith.
She detailed how Monsignor Jim Vlaun, a comforting presence during her husband’s final days, provided her spiritual support. His reassurances about the afterlife offered Lucci solace, helping her to rediscover her own spirituality and belief in life’s continuation beyond this world.
Through her conversation with the Monsignor and the strength she gained from prayer, Lucci began to embrace life again. She recounted a poignant moment shared with a friend who had faced her own losses yet chose happiness despite the heartache.
“At a certain point, I just didn’t want to be sad all the time. So I chose to be happy,”
Lucci realized she had the choice between perpetual sorrow and rediscovering joy, a revelation she describes as pivotal.
While tackling home renovation projects once meant for the couple to embark on together, Lucci found she could manage on her own, sparking a newfound confidence. Reflecting on her journey, Lucci remains grateful for the life she shared with Huber. “He was so decisive and confident,” she recalled with fondness and laughter, noting his unwavering commitment to their relationship.
Looking to the future, Lucci hopes to inspire others by sharing her story, demonstrating how to embrace life and move forward despite loss. “I want to let people in on my story in the hope that they know they’re not alone,” she shared. “Sometimes, it helps to share your story — it connects us. I want to be part of that.”
As Lucci stands at this new chapter of her life, she remembers her husband with profound love and admits that the feelings of loss persist. Yet, she emphasizes that while you may never completely “move on,” you can indeed learn to “move forward.”
