An extraordinary tale of bravery unfolded on January 30 when a young boy from Australia undertook a heroic swim to secure help for his family, who were left stranded at sea. Thirteen-year-old Austin Appelbee recently shared his experience of enduring a four-hour lone swim through the ocean’s vastness without the safety of a life jacket.
“I just said, ‘Not today, not today, not today. I have to keep on going,'” Austin recounted to Australia’s ABC News.
Austin explained that he courageously swam over two miles during this four-hour ordeal to ensure that his mother and younger siblings received help in time. The family adventure began as a planned beach outing where Austin, his mother Joanne Appelbee, and his siblings ventured into the ocean with a kayak and two inflatable stand-up paddleboards, anticipating just a brief one-hour journey.
The initial conditions were favorable with calm seas, but the weather unexpectedly worsened, causing their kayak to capsize and begin taking on water. As the situation became critical, Joanne Appelbee acknowledged Austin’s critical role in ensuring their rescue.
“In the beginning, it was, ‘We’re going to be fine and Austin is going to make it back,'” said Joanne. “As time went on, I was like, ‘Why haven’t I seen anyone come?'”
A responsible decision was made to send Austin ahead to seek help onshore. This remarkable footage, captured by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, shows the eventual arrival of a rescue boat to the Appelbee family’s location.
Reflecting on his experience, Austin shared that his swim was accompanied by thoughts of his loved ones and fond memories of his favorite Thomas the Tank Engine character to keep him motivated during the daunting swim. He initially attempted to traverse the waves with the kayak but ultimately decided to forge ahead by himself.
“And then finally, I just made it to shore. I just collapsed,” Austin described the moment he reached safety.
Upon arriving ashore, his endeavor was not complete. Exhausted yet determined, Austin sprinted an additional mile along the beach to retrieve a phone and alert emergency services. His mother expressed deep pride, “He’s absolutely amazing,” Appelbee remarked about her son, “Me and his dad are super proud.”
Following Austin’s courageous actions, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority responded, helping the Appelbee family reach safety with footage documenting the rescue.
