Tracy Scroggins, Former Detroit Lions Linebacker, Dies at 56

Tracy Scroggins, a celebrated former linebacker known for his time with the Detroit Lions, has passed away at the age of 56. His family shared the news on Monday, expressing their grief and honoring his legacy.

In a statement provided to TMZ, the family said, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Tracy Scroggins.” They highlighted his qualities of resilience and compassion, remembering him as “a devoted father, cherished family member, and loyal friend whose life was marked by remarkable strength and perseverance.” While many knew of him through his successful NFL career, his family shared that those closest to him saw a kind and generous individual who cared deeply for his loved ones.

The family mentioned potential chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) as a factor in his death. CTE is a brain condition linked to repeated head injuries or concussions. They stated, “Playing in the NFL gave Tracy the opportunity to pursue his lifelong dream and to rise from poverty. However, unfortunately, the NFL was also ultimately the cause of his untimely demise. Tracy spent every moment of retirement courageously battling the devastating effects of CTE. While our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that he is finally at peace.”

There was no confirmation from the family regarding plans to have Scroggins’ brain tested for CTE. He was one of the players involved in concussion-related lawsuits against the NFL prior to a settlement reached in 2015.

Scroggins dedicated 10 years to his professional football career, spending the entirety with the Detroit Lions. Originally from Oklahoma, he was drafted in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft following his college football tenure at Tulsa. Throughout his career, he achieved an impressive record of 60½ sacks, making him one of the top performers in Lions’ history.

In addition to his accomplishments on the football field, Scroggins was also recognized for his athleticism in high school, where he played basketball and track.
