U.S. Figure Skater Amber Glenn Responds to Criticism After Olympic Victory

1 month ago 0

American figure skater Amber Glenn addressed her critics on Tuesday after winning gold in the team event at the Winter Olympics. She had taken a break from social media due to negative comments she received after criticizing the administration of then-President Donald Trump. Returning to TikTok, she shared photos of herself and fellow skater Alysa Liu, targeting her caption at those who had criticized her.

They hate to see two woke b—-es winning,” Glenn stated, adding, “If ‘Woke’ means people who use their platforms to advocate for marginalized communities in the country that they are actively representing… Then yeah sure?

Glenn made headlines after condemning the Trump administration during a pre-Olympics press conference the previous week, describing it as a challenging period for her and the LGBTQ community. This comment was among several political statements from U.S. athletes leading up to the Games.

She expressed in her speech that the LGBTQ community had often faced difficult times and needed to unite to defend their human rights. Glenn highlighted that it wasn’t only the queer community affected but also other marginalized groups, emphasizing the new-found strength in solidarity.

The public reaction was intense enough that Glenn decided to step back from social media for some time. She later wrote in an Instagram Story, “When I chose to utilize one of the amazing things about the United States of America (Freedom of speech) to convey how I feel as an athlete competing for Team USA in a troubling time for many Americans, I am now receiving a scary amount of hate/threats for simply using my voice WHEN ASKED about how I feel.”

Despite expecting backlash, Glenn expressed disappointment with the extent of it. She announced her intention to reduce her social media activity for her wellbeing, adding that she would continue to speak out for her beliefs.

Amber Glenn, alongside teammates Ellie Kam and Alysa Liu, celebrated their gold medals for the figure skating team event at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, showcasing their sporting excellence amid the backdrop of social and political commentary.
