93-Year-Old Referee Frank Foster: Fit and Active

Frank Foster, at the age of 93, continues to officiate soccer matches three times a week for his local soccer association. Over his 46-year career, he has refereed around 5,500 matches. Foster credits his stamina and longevity to a lifetime of healthy habits and a nutritious diet.

Foster explains that the strict wartime rations he experienced as a teenager instilled in him the importance of eating healthy foods over indulgent sweets and cakes. His game-day ritual begins with a nutritious breakfast of oatmeal, cereal, or marmalade on toast, providing the energy needed to referee full 90-minute games.

Foster, who began refereeing in 1980, officiates men’s, women’s, and children’s games. His mental acuity and physical endurance remain sharp, attributed to his rigorous lifestyle.

A former military veteran, Foster aced his referee exam with an impressive 98 percent score. He maintains order on the field with discipline and is critical of modern officials, considering them too lenient. To manage player behavior, he sets strict guidelines and has little tolerance for theatrics.

Foster actively resists the modern trend of video play review, believing it leads to unnecessary tension with minor technicalities spoiling the game. He exemplifies his authority by preventing players from crowding him, stating, “I would say to the players ‘stay where you are’ and ‘if you move one more inch, I will give you a yellow card’.”

An advocate for traditional officiating, Foster emphasizes the importance of maintaining control and clarity on the field without the use of video assistance.

Despite his age, Foster never anticipated he’d still be refereeing. He ensures his referee kit is well-maintained and places great care in keeping his black Adidas boots clean and ready for each match.
