Serena Williams Returns to Tennis at HSBC Championship

3 weeks ago 0

Serena Williams is making a comeback to tennis, participating in the HSBC Championship in London. This announcement has thrilled fans and organizers alike, with the tournament declaring, “THE QUEEN RETURNS.”

Williams, 44, has been absent from competitive tennis for almost four years. She expressed her excitement about returning to play at such a renowned venue, stating, “I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.” She will enter the doubles event on June 8 through a wild card slot.

The Tennis Channel, which will broadcast the event, described the news as significant. Williams has spent her recent years engaged in business, philanthropy, and motherhood. While she did not commit to a full return to tennis, she remarked that the HSBC Championship “feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter.”

Enthusiasts are hopeful to see more of Williams this summer. The HSBC Championships on the Queen’s Club grass courts often act as a prelude to Wimbledon, starting in late June.

Williams stands out as a wild card entrant, given her impressive tenure as a WTA World No. 1, which spanned over six years. Her record includes 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any woman in the Open era, along with several Olympic medals in singles and doubles.

Reports of Williams’ anticipated return surfaced about six months ago, after she re-entered the Registered Testing Pool of the International Tennis Integrity Agency. Despite initial denials, this move was interpreted by many as a step toward her return to the sport.

Williams joins a select group of nine former No. 1 female players who resumed their WTA careers after motherhood, as noted by the WTA.
