The U.S. Coast Guard has arrived in the Bahamas to assist in the search for Lynette Hooker, an American woman reported missing. The Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvell reached Hope Town, departing earlier from Miami. Divers will search a new 25-foot-deep area in the Sea of Abaco.
On Tuesday, a Coast Guard vessel arrived near the Abaco Inn, unloading equipment at a dock before continuing their mission. Lynette Hooker disappeared on April 4, while boating near Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands with her husband, Brian Hooker. Brian maintains that his wife fell from a dinghy at night and was swept away. Her body has not been found.
A family friend described Lynette as a supportive person, sharing that her disappearance has deeply affected the local boating community. Despite the lack of news, the friend holds onto hope for her return.
Authorities have seized the Hooker’s boat, Soulmate, now docked in Fort Lauderdale, for further investigation. They aim to inspect its electronics and navigation systems for clues.
A U.S. official stated that the case is being treated as a murder. There’s consideration for possible charges with challenges due to the lack of remains. Prosecutor Julie Rendelman explained the complexities of pursuing a murder charge without a body, emphasizing the need for physical evidence.
Brian Hooker was initially detained but released by Bahamian authorities. He faces no formal charges, and his lawyer has not provided any comments.
