Graham Platner, the anticipated Democratic candidate for the Senate in Maine, visited Washington during a period of heightened examination of his past actions. He is challenging five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins.
Platner’s visit included a meeting with Democratic senators, although the response appeared cautious. He invited the entire Senate Democratic caucus for an afternoon session, but only around six senators attended.
Earlier in the day, Platner met one-on-one for 30 minutes with Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the minority leader. Schumer had previously endorsed Platner’s primary opponent, who suspended her campaign a month prior.
Amidst reports of Platner sending sexual messages to women outside his marriage, Schumer faced questions from reporters. He avoided direct comments about Platner, instead focusing on the goal of defeating Collins in the upcoming election. Schumer stated, “We’re going to beat Susan Collins and take back the Senate,” repeating it multiple times before ending the media session.
