President Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate the acting Attorney General, Todd Blanche, to lead the Department of Justice on a permanent basis. This decision is expected to increase tensions within Capitol Hill. Blanche, who previously served as a federal prosecutor and Trump’s personal defense attorney, has been acting as attorney general since April. This follows the firing of Pam Bondi, as reported by the Associated Press. The nomination will require confirmation by the U.S. Senate, where Republicans currently hold a narrow majority.
“We are going to make him permanent attorney general,” Trump stated during a White House event. This statement was shared through a video posted on X by Dan Scavino. Newsweek reached out to the White House for comments late on Wednesday night.
Key Issues
Todd Blanche is facing significant challenges, notably concerning a proposed $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund.” This fund is intended to compensate individuals claiming unjust treatment by the government. The proposal has received criticism across party lines and has encountered legal challenges. Eventually, the administration adhered to a federal court’s order, which temporarily blocked the fund.
On Wednesday night, Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized the nomination on MS Now’s The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell. Jeffries stated that Blanche lacks the qualifications for the roles of deputy attorney general, acting attorney general, and United States attorney general. He emphasized that the position should serve the interests of the American people, contrasting it with Blanche’s earlier role as Trump’s personal lawyer. Jeffries also mentioned that the administration had to pause the anti-weaponization fund project due to “intense public pressure.”
