The United States, along with several countries in the Shield of the Americas, firmly condemned ongoing efforts to overthrow Bolivia’s elected government. This statement was released on Friday expressing strong support for President Rodrigo Paz.
The statement highlighted attempts to disrupt Bolivia through alleged fake road blockades that hinder the delivery of food, medicine, and other essential supplies, emphasizing that mob rule should not replace the decision made by Bolivians at the ballot box.
The countries warned that individuals funding protests with money from drug trafficking and transnational crime must be held accountable. They urged those with legitimate grievances to engage in dialogue and condemn those who exploit their causes.
The State Department’s joint statement involved nations including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Social unrest persists in La Paz and other major Bolivian cities, driven by economic inflation and rising fuel prices. Defense Minister Marcelo Salinas resigned amid the crises.
President Paz introduced policies such as land reform aimed at boosting agribusiness, which faced backlash from Indigenous farmers fearing eviction. He also eliminated fuel subsidies, causing a significant price hike and complaints about fuel quality.
Former President Evo Morales has called for early elections, criticizing Paz’s government. Morales, who is wanted on human trafficking charges, has been in hiding in Bolivia.
The Trump administration suggested that drug traffickers are behind the unrest. On X, War Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized the United States’ vigilance and support for the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition’s efforts to deter narco-terrorists.
