Keiko Fujimori Takes Lead as Peru’s Presidential Race Nears Conclusion

1 hour ago 0

As vote counting in Peru’s presidential runoff election nears completion, right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori has established a substantial lead. Official data indicates she holds 50.12% of the vote, surpassing leftist rival Roberto Sanchez by over 43,000 votes. This is based on 99.86% of ballots counted, according to the National Office of Electoral Processes.

Despite Fujimori’s lead, election officials have yet to process 131 tally sheets, which account for approximately 39,000 votes. This number is insufficient for Sanchez to overcome the existing margin. The electoral authority won’t declare a winner until mid-July, as reported by Reuters. A victory for Fujimori would further shift Latin America toward right-wing politics.

Amid the election outcomes in Peru, Colombia witnessed its own political shift. Populist Abelardo de la Espriella narrowly emerged victorious in a contentious presidential runoff. Concerns over crime have drawn voters to hardline candidates across the region.

Sanchez stated he won’t acknowledge a government led by Fujimori, citing alleged “serious violations” during the electoral process. He claims there were administrative irregularities involving around 300,000 overseas ballots, which heavily backed Fujimori. These ballots primarily came from voters in the United States and Japan.

Fujimori’s party announced it would wait until the count is completed before claiming victory. Whoever wins will assume office on July 28 for a five-year term. The June 7 runoff saw Fujimori, daughter of late former president Alberto Fujimori, competing against Sanchez, aligned with former president Pedro Castillo.

The election was anticipated to offer political stability in a country plagued by years of governmental turmoil, with multiple presidents imprisoned and ousted. Yet, the election results underscore a nation starkly divided. The populous coastal regions stand in contrast to the rural, Indigenous south.
