Powerful Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Warning in Southern Philippines

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck off the coast of Sarangani in the southern Philippines early on Monday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the quake. They have issued a warning about potential tsunami waves.

Authorities have issued tsunami alerts for several coastal areas in southern Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago. PHIVOLCS predicts the arrival of tsunami waves between 7:37 a.m. and 9:37 a.m. local time.

The U.S. embassy in the Philippines has advised all residents in the affected areas to seek higher ground or move further inland immediately. The immediate evacuation is crucial to ensure safety from potential tsunami waves.

Reports from Philippine authorities confirm at least 15 people have lost their lives. Additionally, around 129 people sustained injuries following the earthquake’s impact.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
