Some workouts make you feel motivated and powerful, while others can be challenging. Sticking to a routine is useful, yet it may lead to monotony. Personal trainer Luka Hocevar explains that when progress stalls, motivation can deteriorate.
Regular exercise is crucial, though maintaining momentum is tough. Data from The Pew Research Center shows 57% of Americans prioritize exercise, but only 28% feel successful.
Why Do Workouts Lose Their Efficacy?
Initially, workouts yield visible results. Over time, these changes slow. Hocevar, who has trained over 4,000 clients, believes the lack of structure and progression is a key reason why workouts lose impact. He states that without a plan, results plateau.
To sustain results, you must progressively increase your targets. This approach prevents performance drop-offs.
Why Do People Lose Motivation?
Hocevar identifies superficial goals as a common reason for decreased motivation. Goals like losing a few pounds can lack depth, making it difficult to stay committed when challenges arise.
He relates this to self-determination theory, which involves autonomy, competence, and relatedness. These factors keep people motivated. Autonomy enables choice and control. Competence involves mastery and visible progress. Relatedness fosters connection within a fitness community.
When workouts lack these elements, exercise can feel repetitive and uninspiring. Alternatively, workouts offering choice, measurable progress, and community are more engaging.
Is Routine the Problem?
For some, a routine ensures consistent exercise. Yet, others thrive on novelty. Hocevar notes some clients, termed “novelty seekers,” need varied exercises to stay motivated.
Including new exercises and methods keeps novelty seekers engaged. Personal trainers should identify which clients respond to different approaches.
How To Start Seeing Results Again
When progress stalls, Hocevar suggests hiring a coach or exploring new training programs with proven processes. A focused eight to twelve-week program can offer valuable insights.
Instead of viewing a workout plan as rigid, consider it an opportunity for exploration. Trying new exercises and challenges can inject fun into fitness. This variety can include new sports, gym classes, or using different equipment.
Hocevar advises that consistency is key. Joining a gym or fitness community builds accountability and belonging.
