The Democrats are entering this week’s Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park with high tension, as they face a six-game losing streak. The GOP is expecting to add a substantial player to their lineup, further intensifying the competition. Texas Rangers and New York Yankees legend, Mark Teixeira (R-Texas), known for his impressive career with 409 home runs, is anticipated to easily win a congressional seat in November. This would enable him to join the GOP roster.
Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) expressed the Democrats’ strategy to tackle Teixeira’s prowess. “We’re just going to walk him every time we have an opportunity,” he told The Hill. Gallego suggested that the Democrats need to recruit a major league player for help.
Teixeira, despite nearly a decade without playing professional baseball, remains enthusiastic. “I’m excited about knocking off the rust — then beating the Democrats on and off the field,” he shared on X.
GOP pitcher Greg Steube (Fla.-17) is determined to maintain his strong performance. He looks forward to participating and supporting charity. In 2021, he made history with the first out-of-the-park home run at the Congressional Baseball Game in 40 years, highlighting his ability to dominate.
Rep. Pat Harrigan (R-N.C.), who excelled in college baseball at Georgetown, effectively relieved Steube in 2025, continuing the GOP’s winning streak. Harrigan confidently stated on Instagram, “Republicans have won the game five years in a row, and for some reason the Democrats keep showing up.” The GOP aims for their sixth consecutive win.
Ahead of the game, Democrats must face the reality of their potential decade-long losing streak. Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) celebrated the GOP’s recent victory in the 2023 Congressional Baseball Game.
As a silver lining for the Democrats, the extensive losses have contributed positively to D.C. charities. The 2025 game raised $2.75 million, with this year’s event expected to surpass that amount. The dedicated efforts for charity through this event highlight its significance beyond the competition.
