Chicago White Sox Capitalize on Tampa Bay Errors for a 9-1 Victory

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Chicago White Sox’s left fielder, Sam Antonacci, kicked off the game against the Tampa Bay Rays with a grounder to second base. Ryan Vilade failed to field the ball cleanly, allowing Antonacci to reach on an error, marking the first of several Rays blunders in the inning. The White Sox capitalized, scoring twice in that inning, contributing to their 9-1 triumph in front of 23,559 fans at Tropicana Field.

Leading the American League Central, the Sox (59-52) succeeded in winning two out of three games in the series against the AL East-leading Rays. “Winning these types of games is always great,” said infielder Miguel Vargas.

The Sox maintained a three-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians (57-56), who secured a victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 5-0 score. The Sox set the tone early in the game.

After Antonacci reached base on the error, he moved to third thanks to a double from Colson Montgomery. Andrew Benintendi hit a grounder back to the pitcher, Griffin Jax, who bobbled it. Though Jax recovered, his belated throw to first base allowed Benintendi to reach safely while Antonacci scored on the error. The Sox’s second run came when Benintendi, upon stealing second base, eluded Rays shortstop Ben Williamson. Montgomery then managed to score, bringing the score to 2-0.

“Starting off with two runs was huge,” remarked Sox manager Will Venable. “It’s great to capitalize on such errors, especially against a strong defensive team like Tampa. Our team knows how to seize opportunities, and they’ve shown competitiveness throughout.”

Benintendi later blasted a solo home run in the fourth inning. In the sixth, Everson Pereira drove in two runs with a double against reliever Craig Kimbrel, extending the lead to 5-0. Pereira continued his strong performance in the ninth inning with a two-run homer against Alex Cook.

Venable praised Pereira’s contributions, noting, “Despite not initially being in the lineup, Pereira had a huge impact on the game. He’s dealt with injuries and adjustments this season, so it’s encouraging to see him perform well.” Pereira commented through an interpreter on his challenging year, stating, “Despite the ups and downs, I remain focused on what’s ahead.”

In the ninth inning, Vargas hit a two-run homer, sealing the victory further. White Sox pitcher Anthony Kay had a stellar outing, allowing seven hits over 6 1/3 innings, a personal best. Kay struck out three and walked one, managing to escape bases-loaded situations in both the fourth and sixth innings.

“Having everything working for Kay today was impressive,” noted Venable. “His ability to handle tricky situations and still deliver strong innings was commendable.”

The Sox have shown resilience against top AL East teams. After splitting four games against the Yankees, they clinched a series victory over the Rays (65-46), who boast the best AL record this season. The Sox limited Tampa Bay to a mere three runs across the series.

“Winning a series is always beneficial,” Kay reflected. “Our performances against the Yankees and Rays highlight our standing in the league.”

With an upcoming series in Boston on the horizon, the White Sox are optimistic. Excitement surrounds their latest acquisition, pitcher Luis Castillo, from the Seattle Mariners. “We’ve positioned ourselves well, motivating the front office to support us further,” Vargas stated. “Our unified goal of aiming for the World Series benefits us all.”
