The Kansas City Chiefs have restructured quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ contract to extend it by two years, raising compensation above half a billion dollars. ESPN and NFL Network confirmed this arrangement. The Chiefs, known for not disclosing financial terms, have tied Mahomes to the team through 2033, with a contract valued at $504.75 million. Incentives and escalators may increase his earnings to $522.25 million.
Mahomes previously signed a 10-year contract for $450 million in 2020, setting a standard for players in the league. His agency, Equity Sports, celebrated the contract extension. The Chiefs routinely adjust Mahomes’ contract to maintain financial flexibility, helping them acquire top talent for championship pursuits. The new deal presents a significant salary increase amid recent quarterback market changes, including deals signed by Dak Prescott, Jordan Love, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen. Mahomes’ average annual salary will grow to $63.1 million, surpassing Dak Prescott’s league-leading $60 million average.
Last December, Mahomes underwent surgery after tearing ligaments in his knee during a game against the Chargers. Mahomes has been rehabbing in Kansas City and participated in all offseason workouts, concluding with the final day of mandatory minicamp. Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes’ dedication and the importance of maintaining timing with the wide receivers. Mahomes remains focused on being ready for the start of the season.
Looking forward, the Chiefs play their preseason game against the Rams on August 15. Their regular-season debut occurs on September 14 against Denver at Arrowhead Stadium. Mahomes, eager to join his teammates on the field, emphasized achieving daily goals to prepare effectively.
Since becoming the starter in 2018, Mahomes has set numerous records. He has thrown for nearly 36,000 yards, received six Pro Bowl selections, and won three Super Bowls in five attempts. Despite last season’s disappointing 6-11 finish while he was on injured reserve, Mahomes remains committed to returning strong.
Mahomes stated his ambition to perform in Week 1, focusing on day-to-day improvement. He reiterated his competitive mindset and intention to excel during the coming season, emphasizing short-term goals as milestones toward readiness for Week 1.
