The Colorado Buffaloes face a potential challenge as their season opener against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets approaches. Head coach Deion Sanders might be unavailable due to a legal obligation involving his son, Shilo Sanders.
Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today reported that Deion Sanders could need to testify in Shilo’s bankruptcy case set for August 31 to September 4. This timing conflicts with the Buffaloes’ preparation for their September 3 game. The judge overseeing the case acknowledged this clash, suggesting Sanders might attempt to resist the subpoena.
Colorado will travel to face Georgia Tech just when Sanders might be needed in court. The absence of Deion during this crucial preparation period and possibly the game itself raises concerns for the team.
Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk remarked that Sanders might avoid missing time if he can provide his testimony via video. This solution would enable him to meet his legal obligations without leaving team practices and meetings.
The University of Colorado has not commented on the situation despite multiple inquiries from news agencies.
Deion’s presence during the Georgia Tech matchup is crucial. The Buffaloes aim to improve from last season’s disappointing 3-9 record. Without Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, the team’s performance has been criticized. Deion, who signed a five-year, $54 million contract extension, is under scrutiny to deliver successful seasons.
In his tenure at Colorado, Deion Sanders has coached to a 16-21 record, with a 9-18 standing in Big 12 play. The team has made one bowl appearance, losing the 2024 Alamo Bowl to BYU. Critics point to his reduced success without key players like Shedeur and Hunter, noting a 7-12 record without their contributions.
