Mexico City’s renowned stadium will make history by hosting the World Cup opener for a third time. The stadium has been transformed with nearly $200 million in renovations, boosting its capacity to 87,500 seats. This reflects significant investment in preparation for the tournament.
Tensions have been apparent between Mexico, Canada, and the United States recently. However, the historic World Cup collaboration among these nations symbolizes teamwork and cooperation.
Back in 2018, when this World Cup was awarded to the United States, Mexico, and Canada, leaders emphasized the theme of unity. Justin Trudeau, Canada’s Prime Minister at the time, remarked on the chance to demonstrate cooperation. Enrique Peña Nieto, the then-president of Mexico, echoed similar sentiments about unity among the nations. President Donald Trump, in his first term, celebrated the award, noting the hard work involved.
The tournament is set to kick off this week in Mexico. The opening match will feature the Mexican team against South Africa. This event is part of a larger set of 104 games distributed across various cities. These include sites from Vancouver and Toronto to New York, Kansas City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara.
