The Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper faced arrest for the second time in a week. On Thursday night, police apprehended Cooper for allegedly violating a protection order. This order followed a previous arrest linked to domestic violence charges.
Cooper and his girlfriend both faced arrests on domestic violence charges the preceding Friday. Each faced two domestic violence counts and one count of criminal mischief, according to Douglas County jail records. Court records, reported by the New York Post, also revealed additional charges against Cooper, including felony strangulation.
We are disappointed to learn of Jonathon Cooper’s arrest on Thursday and continue to review this matter, stated the Broncos.
The couple, involved in an on-and-off relationship for years, argued at Cooper’s home. The altercation began when she accused him of infidelity. She threw his phone against the wall and later managed to check its contents. The struggle for the phone continued until Cooper regained it. He then asked her to leave, threatening to break her phone.
Despite her refusal to leave, Cooper allegedly damaged her phone by breaking its screen. Following these events, Cooper entered a not guilty plea earlier in the week.
Cooper, now 28, joined the Broncos when they selected him in the seventh round of the NFL Draft from Ohio State. Over his five-year Broncos career, he became a vital component of their defense, with 50 tackles and eight sacks in 17 games last season. Cooper’s career stats include 81 game appearances, totaling 266 tackles and 31.5 sacks. In November 2024, the Broncos extended Cooper’s contract for four years, worth $60 million.
