Graham Platner’s Controversial Rise in Maine’s Democratic Primary

2 weeks ago 0

Radical leftist Graham Platner has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Maine amid a series of scandals. This began with the revelation of a Nazi-related tattoo on Platner’s chest. The tattoo resembles a ‘Totenkopf,’ used by S.S. troops during the Holocaust.

Major broadcast networks initially ignored this controversy. On April 22, National Public Radio did not mention it. Steve Mistler of Maine Public Radio noted that Platner’s history of offensive social media posts has not deterred high-profile endorsements. Among these endorsers is Massachusetts Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

The media took notice again on May 31 when news broke of Platner’s sexting scandal. His wife, Amy, alerted campaign officials about his communications with multiple women, which was later leaked to The Wall Street Journal.

Questions arose on how these scandals might impact Platner’s candidacy. CBS, NBC, and ABC hosts posed open-ended questions to Democrats about his character and the potential impact on the Democratic Senate seat in Maine.

Maine voters remain divided as Platner’s controversies overshadow the Democratic primary.

Notably, Platner stood alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders at a ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ event at the University of Maine in late May.

On June 5, The New York Times brought another scandal to light. Ex-girlfriends accused Platner of toxic behavior and possible abuse. CBS anchor Tony Dokoupil discussed Platner as a key piece in the Democrats’ strategy to reclaim the Senate, despite Platner’s troubled past.

Selina Wang of ABC echoed allegations of violent behavior by Platner but approached the tattoo issue lightly, framing it as a misunderstanding. NBC only later addressed these abuse claims, highlighting Platner’s denials of physical aggression.

David Brooks of PBS described Platner as morally deficient. He cited numerous controversies as detrimental to his character, while Jonathan Capehart argued Platner’s necessity in a political contest against Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

In a narrative twist, NBC reporter Ryan Nobles observed that Platner’s scandals might have bolstered his connection with a progressive base, bringing enthusiasm to his campaign. On late-night television, Jimmy Kimmel jokingly compared Platner’s primary win to Trump’s controversies, illustrating Platner’s enduring notoriety.
