Beloved Bald Eagle Likely Found and Rescued Near Big Bear

A bald eagle discovered near Big Bear over the weekend is likely Jackie, part of a popular eagle pair from a long-running nest livestream. The wildlife nonprofit, Friends of Big Bear Valley, shared that based on public and rescuer videos and photos, the rescued eagle is probably Jackie. They reported, “She is in the best place she can be and getting the care she needs.”

Rescue Details

The adult bald eagle was spotted on the ground in Dana Point Park, within the Fawnskin community adjacent to Big Bear Lake, on Thursday and Friday. In a confrontation with two sub-adult eagles, video evidence showed the adult defended itself but couldn’t fly far. The L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation noted the encounter.

Jackie hadn’t been seen near the nest for several days before the incident. Since 2015, fans have followed Jackie and her mate, Shadow, on the webcam, witnessing both tragedies and triumphs. Recently, their eaglets, Sandy and Luna, successfully took their first flights at the end of last month.

Community Response

On Saturday, personnel from L.A. County Parks and Recreation San Dimas Raptor Rescue picked up the grounded eagle. They expressed, “When a bald eagle was found in need near Big Bear Lake, an incredible team came together to make sure it received the care it deserved.” The eagle is now receiving care at a specialized rehabilitation center.

Although the news alarmed the Big Bear bald eagle community online, Friends of Big Bear Valley warned against spreading misinformation and urged followers not to contact the rescue agency, citing limited resources. One Instagram user commented, “It’s been a very worrying wait this weekend with Jackie MIA.” Another user, referencing the Parks and Recreation post, noted, “That’s her, no doubt. Been watching for 2 years now, I know her better than some of my own relatives.”

Following the confirmation by the nonprofit that the eagle was believed to be Jackie, a commenter expressed, “Praying for a speedy recovery so she can go back to her family soon!”
