A fire on Turlington Road in Harvey is under investigation for potential arson, according to a statement from the Harvey Fire Department. The blaze took place on June 2, involving several abandoned homes.
Fire officials noted evidence suggesting deliberate ignition. “Evidence has been recovered indicating that the fires may have been intentionally set,” officials stated. More forensic analysis is required for confirmation.
The fire started at 2:30 a.m. in the 15400 block of Turlington Road and was controlled by 4 a.m. Chief Howard Fisher emphasized the gravity of the incident. “We take these incidents very seriously and are committed to identifying those responsible,” he said. Ensuring the safety of residents, businesses, and firefighters was highlighted as the highest priority.
During clean-up operations, electricians discovered a kitten in the debris. The fires, initially starting in two structures, spread due to intense heat and power line hazards. ComEd cut the power as a safety measure.
No injuries have been reported. The fire department is collaborating with state and local partners for the investigation.
Previously, Harvey furloughed about 40% of city workers due to financial distress, including nearly half of the Fire Department. Support from neighboring communities has helped meet operational needs.
Authorities urge those with information about the fires to reach out at 708-331-7720.
