Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations are gathering for an opening session focused on Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. The summit, held in Evian-les-Bains, has leaders from Italy, Germany, Britain, Japan, and Canada engaging in lively discussions alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Still to arrive are U.S. President Trump, Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy, and France’s President Emmanuel Macron.
Just yesterday, Trump expressed optimism about potential progress in resolving the conflict in Ukraine. With the recent conclusion of the war with Iran, he stated, “Now that this matter is finished, we’re going to be focusing on that.” Previously, the U.S. had been involved in efforts to mediate a resolution to the war, which has now entered its fifth year. These diplomatic initiatives have seen limited progress recently, with Zelenskyy repeatedly calling for Western allies to intensify efforts against Russia.
“Now that this (Iran) is finished, we’re going to be focusing on that,” Trump said.
Energy markets have reacted sharply to the U.S.-Iran agreement, with oil prices dropping significantly and global stocks showing modest gains. U.S. crude oil price fell 4.8% to $80.75 per barrel, while Brent crude decreased by 4.7% to $83.17 per barrel. These prices represent the lowest levels since early March, soon after the conflict with Iran commenced.
Additionally, Vice President JD Vance confirmed that nuclear inspectors will return to Iran under the new agreement to end the Middle Eastern conflict. Speaking to NBC News, Vance stated that the memorandum of understanding (MOU) outlines that both the International Atomic Energy Agency and the United States will aid Iran in eliminating its highly enriched stockpile. The MOU, which sets the terms to end the war, will be officially signed on Friday in Switzerland.
In the G7 summit, President Trump will face European allies with differing views on the two wars. The allies criticize his initiation of the Iran war and urge him to act more decisively to end the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
