A Russian spy vessel has been observed closely monitoring NATO warships near the U.K. coastline during a large-scale military exercise. The Viktor Leonov, a Vishnya-class reconnaissance ship, kept a close watch on allied forces participating in Exercise Strike Warrior in the Outer Hebrides.
This naval drill involved eight warships, 19 aircraft, and over 2,000 personnel from six different nations. In retaliation, Britain’s Royal Navy dispatched ships and helicopters to intercept the Russian intelligence-gathering vessel and two Russian frigates.
Operation Iceblast, an urgent deployment, saw Wildcat and Merlin class helicopters sent swiftly from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall to Glasgow Prestwick Airport in Scotland. The Merlins, utilizing their sensors, monitored the Viktor Leonov from September 29 to October 8.
Captain James Hall, commanding officer of RNAS Culdrose, stated, “I am proud of our team’s efforts, proving once again that the U.K. is prepared to meet immediate operational demands. This task was part of Operation Iceblast, designed to test the Merlin Helicopter Force’s capability to deploy quickly from its base.”
Separately, HMS Tyne and HMS Dauntless were tasked with observing RFN Neustrashimy from October 1 to October 14. HMS Tyne transferred responsibility to HMS Dauntless, allowing it to pursue a second vessel, RFN Aleksandr Shabalin, from October 11 to October 14. Both Russian ships were escorting cargo ships carrying sanctioned goods through the English Channel.
Lieutenant Commander Sam Fields of HMS Tyne expressed pride in the vessel’s adaptability and readiness to protect national interests, while Commander Neil Skinner of HMS Dauntless emphasized the importance of the Royal Navy’s surveillance capabilities.
In June 2026, for the first time, Britain intercepted a vessel from Russia’s shadow fleet. This fleet, containing over 700 ships, transports approximately 75% of Russia’s sanctioned oil, contributing to the combat funds for Russia’s actions against Ukraine. To date, the U.K. has sanctioned over 600 ships.
U.K.’s Treasury chief unveiled a £10 billion support package for Ukraine, including £500 million aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses during the winter period. The U.K. plans to invest a total of £4.5 billion in military aid to Ukraine this year, marking its largest contribution since the conflict began.
