New York City is preparing to introduce a new area code, 465, to meet the growing demand for phone numbers. This marks the eighth area code assigned to the city, the first addition since 2017. The new code will cover the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Marble Hill section of Manhattan.
Area codes in New York carry significant social weight, with the original 212 being seen as prestigious. This was first assigned in 1947 and is particularly associated with Manhattan. The 212 area code is mentioned in Azealia Banks’ song, highlighting its iconic status.
As New York continues to expand, the need for more phone numbers has become urgent. While some New Yorkers may feel uneasy about being assigned a number with the new code, others remember Carrie Bradshaw’s fictional dilemma in ‘Sex and the City’ when she was forced to switch from 917 to 347.
The new 465 area code is expected to alleviate pressure by providing more unique number combinations in a city where everything from bagel choices to pronunciation is scrutinized.
