Diplomatic efforts to maintain a tentative agreement between Iran and the United States faced challenges after Israeli strikes in Lebanon led to Iran pulling out of peace talks. Diplomats worked hard on Friday to keep the fragile deal intact.
Initially, a long-term peace negotiation was planned to begin in Switzerland, following a recently signed framework agreement by President Trump. However, the Israeli military actions prompted Iran’s withdrawal, affecting the proceedings.
Despite these setbacks, the truce with Iran has not been definitively abandoned. While shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz increased, it stayed below prewar levels. Israel, involved in the conflict alongside the United States, expressed its commitment to the cease-fire.
“Firmly committed to an immediate cease-fire.”
— Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S.
President Trump communicated with Israeli leaders to endorse the cease-fire in Lebanon, describing it as an additional positive step. Nonetheless, there was no direct mention if he had a discussion with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Hezbollah has not confirmed an agreement on the cease-fire publicly.
The day’s events highlight the delicate nature of the U.S.-Iran agreement, with Lebanon playing a central role. The agreement’s first point emphasizes an immediate end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon. Yet neither Israel nor Hezbollah have endorsed this agreement.
Following the cease-fire at 4 p.m. local time, Lebanon experienced relative calm. The prior overnight Israeli bombing resulted in 47 fatalities and 97 injuries, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. The cease-fire agreement was brokered by Qatar and the U.S., with confirmations of both the cease-fire and Iran’s withdrawal from talks coming from various country officials, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the diplomacy involved.
