Counterterrorism officials are investigating a violent rampage in Scotland that injured five men. The attacks occurred in Edinburgh and are believed to be anti-Muslim in nature. According to BBC News, the violence started near a mosque on Friday evening, just before 9 p.m., where two men were injured.

The suspect, a 36-year-old Scottish man, is also accused of attacking three additional men elsewhere in the city. None of the victims, aged between 22 and 39, sustained life-threatening injuries. Three of the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment.

“Counterterrorism officials are investigating after a suspect went on a rampage in Edinburgh, leaving five men injured.”

In addition to attacking individuals, the suspect allegedly targeted a car at a gas station, smashing its windows and leaving an axe inside. He was also observed on surveillance footage allegedly causing damage in a pizzeria and pushing down shelves in the station’s mart as reported by BBC News.

Police Scotland issued a statement stating that officers responded to numerous reports of a rapid sequence of events and prioritized public safety. The suspect was apprehended around 9:30 p.m. local time and remains in custody.

“This was a shocking attack and my first thoughts are with those who were injured and most directly affected,” said Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton.

Paton emphasized that racism and faith-based hatred have no place in Scotland and stressed the importance of community solidarity.

The suspect reportedly claimed during arrest that he was “protecting the country,” as per BBC News. An extensive investigation is underway, with support from the Counter Terrorism Policing, directed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

The Muslim Council of Britain condemned the attack, expressing concern about community safety. They noted that recent racist incidents in Belfast have heightened anxiety. The council urged community members to stay vigilant, support one another, and report any Islamophobic hate crimes to the authorities.
