Bonnie Tyler, known for her hit song “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” has emerged from a medically induced coma following a cardiac arrest. Although she is no longer in a coma, she remains in intensive care and is described as “very unwell.”
On June 15, her team shared an update on her official website, confirming her condition and current location in a hospital in Portugal. They noted that while her health is improving, the progress is slow. Her doctors, however, are confident in her eventual recovery.
“Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal,” according to her team’s statement.
Due to her health status, upcoming performances have been canceled, though there is hope that her scheduled shows in the fall may still occur. Her team expressed gratitude for the well wishes and requested privacy as her recovery continues.
In May, Bonnie Tyler was hospitalized in Portugal for emergency surgery, which led to the medically induced coma. Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler gained fame in 1976 with the song “Lost in France.” Her career skyrocketed with hits like “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero.” She remained a popular figure, particularly in Europe, and even represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with the song “Believe In Me.”
Throughout the 2020s, Tyler continued performing as part of her Jubilee Tour, marking her 50th anniversary in the music industry. Despite her early iconic songs, they still play a significant role today, with “Total Eclipse of the Heart” often associated with solar or lunar eclipses.
Bonnie Tyler has been married to Robert Sullivan, a former Olympic judo competitor and real estate developer, since 1973. The couple resides between their homes in Wales and Portugal and have chosen a life without children.
