NFL Training Camps: Key Position Battles to Watch

NFL teams have completed their organized team activities and minicamps, preparing to kick off training camps at the end of July. The preseason begins on August 6, with the Hall of Fame Game featuring the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals on NBC. Subsequent preseason games will occur from August 13 to 15, August 20 to 23, and August 27 to 29.

Training Camp Focus: Los Angeles Chargers

Before the preseason, teams like the Los Angeles Chargers will report to training camp, with exact dates yet to be announced. A crucial position battle to watch is the competition for the left guard spot.

Position Battle: Left Guard

With Zion Johnson’s departure, the Chargers are seeking his replacement in the offensive line. Johnson contributed 1,130 offensive snaps last season, conceded 29 pressures, 17 hurries, and five sacks. Three players are vying for the position: Trevor Penning, Kayode Awosika, and Jake Slaughter.

Trevor Penning: Penning is the frontrunner with 33 NFL starts. His versatility across the offensive line includes 1,081 snaps at right tackle, 511 at left tackle, 358 at left guard, and 90 at right guard.

Kayode Awosika: Awosika has more guard experience with 615 snaps at left guard and 358 at right guard during his five seasons with the Detroit Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jake Slaughter: Slaughter, a recent second-round draft pick, is the wild card. Despite playing center in college, his potential at guard is promising. He may get rookie playing time alongside fellow rookies Travis Burke, Logan Taylor, and Alex Harkey.
