Corey Heim achieved his first career Cup Series win during the inaugural NASCAR race at Naval Base Coronado. Despite a challenging start with his No. 67 Toyota hitting the wall twice, Heim managed to secure victory.
Heim, a 23-year-old part-time driver from Marietta, Georgia, composed himself mid-race. He reminded himself of his comparable experience to other veteran racers on the 16-turn, 3.4-mile street course on Coronado Island, near San Diego. “I’m speechless,” Heim remarked. “I had high expectations coming into this race. I just reset and went after it.”
Heim, who won the 2024 truck series championship, plans to move full-time into the Cup Series next season with 23XI Racing. In the race, he led the final three laps after overtaking Tyler Reddick, a teammate. Heim explained, “I was able to stick with him, and when only five laps remained, I put pressure on him. He made a mistake.”
Bubba Wallace finished second, achieving a 1-2 finish for 23XI Racing, co-owned by Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan. Reddick, experiencing a flat tire in the final laps, finished 25th. His placement reduced his lead in the standings to eight points over Hamlin. “Congratulations to Corey,” Reddick stated. “I thought I could hold him off. We needed a good points day, but we’ll try and recover.”
The race marked the second time in three years that a first-time winner emerged from an inaugural street race. Shane van Gisbergen previously won his Cup debut at the 2023 Chicago Street Race. Heim joins Ty Gibbs (Bristol) and Carson Hocevar (Talladega) as first-time winners this season. “It’s unbelievable,” said Heim. “I hope I don’t wake up from this dream.”
Notable compliments came from peers, with two-time Cup champion Kyle Larson saying, “Awesome job by Corey Heim. He’s a super talented driver, and it’s neat to see someone win at a challenging track like this.” Zane Smith and AJ Allmendinger completed the top five.
Denny Hamlin, who previously claimed three victories for Joe Gibbs Racing, finished 14th.
SVG Stunner
Shane van Gisbergen finished 38th in the race after starting in pole position. He was involved in a crash when teammate Connor Zilisch and Austin Hill clashed during a Lap 32 restart. This nine-car incident led to a nine-minute stop for wall repairs.
Zilisch, who commanded the initial eight laps, commented, “I was giving Austin space, and suddenly found myself in the wall. It’s unfortunate. We had a really fast car today. I enjoyed racing from the front.”
Driver Swap
During the first caution, Christopher Bell was replaced by Brent Crews in the No. 20 Toyota. However, Crews exited the race last due to a gearbox issue on the 28th lap.
Bell is still recuperating from a broken wrist incident in June. He mentioned that his exit was precautionary and not pain-related.
One More for Johnson
In the second and final Cup start of his 2026 season, Jimmie Johnson crashed into a tire barrier after missing a chicane. He finished in 28th place. Johnson, a seven-time series champion, plans to retire after the 2027 Daytona 500 but remains open to racing in other series.
Up Next
NASCAR will remain in California, moving to Sonoma Raceway on June 28. Last season, van Gisbergen led 97 of 110 laps and won from the pole position.
