On June 22, 2026, smoke from a fire continued to envelop parts of Los Angeles, following a blaze at a Boyle Heights warehouse. The fire, which began on the roof of a 500,000-square-foot cold-food storage facility, led to a state of emergency and shelter-in-place orders. The South Coast Air Quality Management District reported that smoke persisted, affecting air quality.
The agency’s sensors detected ‘very unhealthy’ air particulate levels, impacting central Los Angeles County, San Gabriel Valley, East San Fernando Valley, and Northwest San Bernardino Valley. Residents were advised to stay indoors and minimize smoke exposure.
‘Residents have lived through days of smoke, shelter-in-place orders, disruptions to daily life, and ongoing questions about what this means for their health and well-being,’ said council member Ysabel Jurado. She pledged to push for resources to address the crisis.
California Governor Gavin Newsom acknowledged the emergency by declaring a state of emergency for Los Angeles County. He emphasized the importance of state support for local efforts in managing the fire and protecting public health.
Mayor Karen Bass issued a Declaration of Local Emergency, highlighting the multi-jurisdictional nature of the incident and the need for resources to support affected communities. Relief centers opened to assist those seeking to escape the smoke.
The warehouse was operated by Lineage, a cold storage and logistics company. The company promised $2 million to aid affected residents and committed to providing air purifiers, food, and other resources to the community. It clarified that they leased the facility and that the fire might have started during maintenance of a solar array on the roof.
The Los Angeles Fire Department reported progress in battling the fire, noting improved smoke conditions as they accessed hidden fire areas. However, intermittent smoke increases were possible.
Social media images captured the smoke’s impact, including its presence around Dodger Stadium. Reporter Ben Bolch noted the challenging conditions posed by the haze during a baseball game.
