Reflections of Ancient Rome in Modern Politics

1 month ago 0

Mary Beard, a scholar of ancient Rome, and John Guida, an editor with Times Opinion, discuss parallels between modern political power and ancient Rome.

The term “imperial presidency” refers to the trend of expanding presidential power across various administrations. President Trump, however, has pushed these boundaries significantly. This raises questions about the nature of power, reminiscent of ancient Roman practices.

Parallels with Ancient Rome

Mary Beard notes that the influence of ancient Rome is evident in contemporary politics. Washington’s plans for grand structures, like triumphal arches, echo Roman traditions. In Rome, such arches commemorated victories and success, often adorned with gold and sculptures. Today’s monuments have lost these original embellishments.

Historical comparisons reveal that similar ideas have emerged in the past. In the 1980s, there was a proposal for an arch in Washington as part of the Navy Memorial. Although several proposals were made, only a temporary structure was constructed after World War I.

Modern Gladiatorial Spectacles

Modern political events also reflect elements of Roman entertainment. For example, the Ultimate Fighting Championship event at the White House coincided with the president’s 80th birthday, paralleling gladiatorial spectacles of ancient times.
