Concession Prices at World Cup Events Stir Controversy

2 days ago 0

World Cup events in North America have raised eyebrows due to high concession prices. Tickets, flights, and accommodation costs are significant, but food and drink prices at venues are also gaining attention. Some offerings are luxurious and pricey, including a $75 caviar-topped tray of tater tots and a $40 five-pound empanada in Miami. Rib-eye tacos in Guadalajara are $8, while Los Angeles offers a Twinkie cheeseburger for $22.

Prices are not far from those seen at NFL games or college football events, yet international fans are surprised. Beer prices especially draw criticism, exceeding $20 per pint, which contrasts starkly with Europe’s typical 4-5 euros pricing.

An engineer from Germany, Thomas Schüller, shared his view on $17 beers during his visit to Toronto. “It’s unfair,” he said, comparing to lower costs in Germany. Despite the sting, fans continue to purchase these expensive refreshments.

Janine Arbetter, visiting from Austria, commented on the concession pricing after ordering a combo meal for nearly $20. Argentina fans showed off lobster rolls costing $34 in Kansas City on social media. In Toronto, a brisket sandwich with chips and soda for about $28 sparked allegations of “robbery” online.

Concession offerings differ by stadium due to FIFA guidelines, leading to varied experiences in each city. The “Fancy AF Tots” in Miami are a unique dish of fried hash browns topped with caviar and crème fraiche. Southern California’s Twinkie cheeseburger features a bacon-wrapped jalapeño stuffed with brisket and cream cheese. Vancouver presents short rib poutine and maple bacon smokies showcasing local flavors.

Zach Williams, Sodexo Live’s vice president, emphasized local experiences at Miami Stadium. “We want it to feel like Miami when you’re here,” he stated. Sodexo Live, the provider in Vancouver and Miami, tailored menus to soccer audiences, enhancing local authenticity.

In Mexico City, beer prices are equivalent to a day’s pay for minimum wage workers. Usual prices in the same stadium are lower outside of World Cup events. At Atlanta Stadium, owner Arthur Blank has maintained affordable prices. Pizza slices are $3, sodas $4, cheeseburgers $5, chicken tenders $6, and beers $8.

Jonathan Arango from Greenville, South Carolina, appreciated the reasonable prices. At a match in Atlanta with his family, he spent $50 on various concessions. “Compared to other events, it’s nice after paying a lot for a ticket,” he remarked.

Schüller highlighted the special nature of the World Cup. “It feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he said, “so cheers to that.”
