Vegas Golden Knights Part Ways with Coach John Tortorella After Reaching Stanley Cup Final

2 weeks ago 0

Typically, when a coach leads a team to the Stanley Cup Final, they retain their position, even if the team loses. However, this was not the case for John Tortorella, the former coach of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Tortorella was appointed with only eight games left in the regular season. Despite limited time, he guided the team to its third Stanley Cup Final in nine seasons. Nonetheless, following a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 6, the Golden Knights swiftly announced that Tortorella would not continue in his role. Ryan Craig, coach of Vegas’ AHL affiliate Henderson Silver Knights, was chosen as his replacement.

“I guess the word I’d use is ‘disappointed,'” Tortorella expressed in an interview with The Athletic. He shared that after the Game 6 defeat, he met with Vegas GM Kelly McCrimmon, who was upfront about the decision to appoint Craig for the next season. Tortorella respected the organization’s direction but admitted he desired more time to complete what he started.

This decision reflects the Golden Knights’ affinity for taking risks, much like their city. Craig was seen as the expected successor, considering the developmental efforts invested in him. Nevertheless, Tortorella, who won a Stanley Cup over two decades ago, had the team performing strongly, raising questions about the choice to change leadership.

Despite the team’s previous success under Bruce Cassidy, they chose to make another gamble by hiring Tortorella, which initially paid off. However, if the team faces challenges in the upcoming season, the front office may encounter scrutiny.
